Known simply as “the Plaza”, this historic area is Santa Fe’s “Central Park,” lined with huge shade trees and benches. It is listed on the National Registry of Historic Places. Many of the buildings surrounding the Plazastands just as they did during colonial Spanish times. Aside from the numerous shops, hotels and restaurants, you will also see a number of famous landmarks. Be sure to visit the Palace of the Governors museum, St. Francis Cathedral and Loretto Chapel. The Plaza is also where many local events take place including the Spanish Market in July and the Indian Market in August.
The monument in the center of the Plaza commemorates the rich history and culture of our community. Look closely. You'll notice one side has a word missing, it's been chipped from the stone in mid-sentence. It was originally a reference to "Savage Indians." It was corrected to read just "Indians," reflecting the change in attitudes.
